Caring for your garden in SPRING.

Spring is the peak of the gardeners’ year.

Everything you have been working towards, finally comes into bloom, better than at any other time of the year.
You can prolong the spring display by regularly picking off spent flower heads from flowering annuals and bulbs.
Preventing annuals from setting seed will keep the plant growing and flowering in an effort to set seed.
Spring is the time to care for your bulbs.

Because the leaves supply food for the plant, do not cut off the foliage of bulbs which have finished flowering. Water over foliage with Thrive or Aquasol.
Perennials planted in winter for summer and autumn flowers can be given a boost with Thrive or Aquasol, and handful of blood and bone, and watered in.
Drying winds can cause wilting. To avoid this, water in the morning when possible. It gives the flowers a chance to dry off.

Annuals for summer flowers.

In all but tropical areas, where summer rains damage plants, the Petunia is king of the summer gardens. Loves heat revels in fairly dry conditions, and is available in an amazing range of varieties.
Phlox make cheerful companion plants, enjoying the sun and well-drained soil.
Marigolds are brilliantly coloured, long flowering annuals. Protect from snails with snail pellets, and keep watered. They will flower through to Autumn.

Raising vegetables and flowers from seed.

Many plants are grown easily from seed. If your beds are still occupied with winter and spring crops, sow seed into punnets, seedling boxes or jiffy pots.
Some popular vegetables……
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Sweet corn
  • Melons
  • Pumpkins
  • Beans
  • Chokos
  • Lettuce
  • Cucumber
  • Capsicum
  • Beetroot
  • Radish
If you have a supply of plastic punnets, these can be washed and filled with a seed raising mixture designed to impove right soil conditions for new seeds.
Prepare punnets by filling to the top with seedling mix then press down firmly. Water down gently with a very fine spray, or stand in a shallow tray filled with water so they are watered from the bottom up.
Dust with a little fungicide powder before planting to protect the young plants.Do this only if the seed hasn't been pre-treated with fungicide.

    Spring care for Summer Lawns.

Summer growing lawn grasses, such as Queensland blue couch, buffalo, all need attention during spring. The cure for all ills, is not simply top dressing.
  • Replant bare patches with runners
  • Fill hollows with top-dressing. Do not spread thickly
  • Fertilise established lawns of summer-growing grasses using a lawn food.
  • The cheapist way to estalish a lawn is from seed. Turf runners or rolls, is fastest.
  • First mowings of a new lawn, the blades should be set high, to allow the grass to grow stongly and thicken.
